Identity Verification for Finance: Why Lenders Ask for ID

identity verification for finance

If you’ve applied for equipment or truck finance recently, you may have noticed that identity verification is now a standard part of the process. Where a quick chat and some financials might once have been enough, we now ask to see your driver’s licence, passport, or other ID before an application can proceed. If you’re wondering why, the short version is this: identity fraud is rising, and lenders are legally required to respond. This article explains what’s driving the change, what it means for your application, why we sometimes need your ID more than once, and how we keep your information safe.

The Problem: Fraud Is Rising

Across the finance industry, lenders have seen a sharp increase in fraudulent applications — from stolen identities being used to secure loans, to falsified documents and manipulated financials. This isn’t just a minor inconvenience for lenders; it can leave innocent people on the hook for debts they never took out, and it drives up costs and risk across the entire lending market.

In response, lenders have tightened their verification requirements, and formal ID checks are now a standard condition of approval, not an optional extra.

What This Means for You

When we ask for a copy of your driver’s licence, passport, or other identification, it’s because:

  • Lenders require it as a condition of assessing and approving your application
  • It protects you by confirming that no one else can apply for finance using your details
  • It speeds up approval, since incomplete applications are often delayed while lenders chase this information

Why We Might Ask More Than Once

You might also notice that we sometimes request your ID again for a new transaction, even if you’ve provided it to us before. This isn’t an oversight — it’s by design.

Once a transaction settles, privacy obligations require us to delete the ID documents we hold on file. We don’t retain copies “just in case,” as doing so would create an unnecessary privacy and security risk. We may need to request your ID again, simply because we’re no longer holding a copy from last time.

Our Commitment

At Access Capital, we handle your ID and personal information securely, and only use it for the purpose of your finance application. As always, we remain 100% independent and work solely in your best interests — so when we ask for your ID, you can trust it’s because a lender genuinely requires it.

If you ever have questions about why certain information is being requested, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always happy to explain exactly what’s needed and why.

A Cautionary Tale From The Market: Why Independence Matters

Back in early December 2025, we worked with a client to secure truck finance. Because the client didn’t need the truck for another three months — his contract wasn’t starting yet — the approval needed refreshing, as these typically only hold for 90 days.

In February 2026, that refresh came back declined. Here’s what had happened in the meantime.

In late December, our client visited a car dealership and signed up for a new Ford Raptor, which came with a six-month wait time. Buried in the paperwork was a privacy form, which he signed along with providing his ID — standard practice for new orders, the dealership told him.

What happened next was anything but standard. The dealership went on to shop our client’s finance application to seven separate lenders. All seven declined it. The result: his credit score dropped to 480, and he now faces a 12-month wait before his rating recovers enough for us to return to our original funder and seek re-approval on the truck finance.

What This Tells Us

Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated case — it reflects a broader trend we’re seeing across the market. Some car and equipment dealerships are going to extraordinary lengths to protect their own interests, sometimes at real cost to the client.

At Access Capital, we’re not aligned with any dealership. We’re 100% independent, and we work 100% in our clients’ best interests. When you work with us, you can be confident that we work for you — and only you.
